IME the customer pays for the cake, but the photographer takes care of getting it.

If you have a decent camera you can do one on your own, if you're interested. I found instructions for how to build a backdrop stand online. My husband built it for me using PVC pipe. I ordered a backdrop sheet on Amazon, baked a cake on my own in a bundt can with Duncan Heinz mix, frosted it pink. I put it on my own nice cake stand. Found the most adorable pink dress secondhand and had the most wonderful photo shoot. Of course if You're not even remotely interested in photography then this might sound like torture instead of fun, but I had a blast.

Sounds awesome! No way I could pull it off.

Because dr. Mom asked me what a cake smash is, so I posted a link to a picture. Why do you care? And why are you anonymous?

I was trying to understand where this tradition came from. It's not common in my community. We certainly have some lovely photos of our children on their 1st with their cakes. Typically the baby would get a small slice or a partial slice to enjoy. My grandchildren all got a bit of a cup cake and photos with their cake.

I checked online for more 'cake smash' photos via google images. Some of them are cute but a bit too theatrical or over done for my taste. Others are quite gross with kids smearing cake all over. I didn't realize people were actually paying for special cakes and photographers. Different people have different tastes when it comes to memorializing these benchmarks in a childs life.

I don't let my one year old's near frosting but I have to say the pictures are really cute. If this is how someone wants to spend their money, it doesn't affect anyone else. I don't think it's baal tashchis b/c I'm sure someone will eat that cake! (If not, I will Smile
Have fun OP!
