Was your child born before his due date or a small baby? Cryptorchidism usually resolves by 8 mos. Is this the first time the Dr. has noticed?

Don't freak out. It's fairly common. You should not wait and see, but rather go to a pediatric urologist, ASAP. They will do the surgery in a month or two. It's best for it to be done by 9 months. They will bring the testicles down and stitch them in place, and then his fertility will not be affected. If you wait to long, his fertility can be affected, so go to the urologist asap.

I know a lot about it , because my son was misdiagnosed as having Undescended testicles, so I did a lot of research and saw a lot of doctors. Unfortunately, what my son has is a lot worse and he will not be able to have children. I promise you that you don't want to experience the pain that I am in. Please take your son to a urologist now. The surgery should be done by a year at the latest.

You are asking good questions. Most answers will depend on your son's specific presentation. In America, most cases of undescended testicles are treated by a urologist (ideally a pediatric urologist). I suggest making an appointment with a specialist, to verify that your son's testicles are properly formed, determine their location (they are likely in his abdomen), and discuss options for lowering them into his scrotum.

BH undescended testicles are often easily lowered info the scrotum, but you should see a qualified specialist to discuss your options.

Good luck!

Had this with our son who is now 9. Doctor noticed when he was one. Said it may sort itself out, but if it doesn't, he would need surgery. He had surgery at age 3. All good bh. Wait and watch but do take care of it. It can affect fertility if left untreated. Surgery bh can make all good.

I'm curious if anyone ever tried Craniosacral therapy for this problem and if it helped.

I don't get it. How could it be that it was not detected until 8 months or a year? Right when my son was born, in the hospital they already told me that it looks like he has an undescended testicle. By every dr. visit, he would check it out. Over the next 2-3 years I went to a few top urologists, and was told that it looks like it was descended (they felt a tiny little something down there) but it had stopped growing in utero (maybe from a torsion).
I was also told by all the doctors that it should not affect his fertility, one testicle is enough. (like having one ovary)

Can this possibly be going up and coming down? I rem seeing them before but it's like suddenly disappeared? I am so confused and scared but if it's something resolvable I'm a lot calmer..

My son had this and we checked it out periodically with a pediatrician and the with a pediatric urologist when he was around 18months. It is possible that your son's are retractile- move back and forth between the scrotum and the groin. That may be why you see them sometimes, as we did. We were told that as long as they descend sometimes and -it did become more frequent- than it was okay and he did not need surgery BH but PLEASE get a proper diagnosis. If the surgery is necessary, it should go well BezH!

At one point a doctor told me that testicles do go up and down, for example if the child is cold or scared.

He recommended checking after a warm bath.

My son did need surgery for it, it was outpatient and bh no complications or lasting issues.

Pediatric nurse here. Retractile testicles (ones that come down but also retract back up- so sometimes you can feel them but sometimes not) is still COMPLETELY normal at 8 months of age. Do not have anxiety over it. This is something your ped will follow at every well visit. Most resolve on their own and stay descended.

I don't understand how they didn't notice this in the hospital!!!they told me my sons sac was empty in the hospital and they didn't see it in the stomach so they got worried but I went to pediatric urologist who found testicles in the ig. Canal so he said lets wait see I moves down --Baruch hashem I didn't wait as long as,he said I brought my son back sooner to check and his testicles moved farther up (not down) into high stomach!!!I wanted to do surgery right away and tried to get him an appt right away because from doing research online I know that the longer the testicles remain in the stomach the more chance of it getting damaged-not being able to function so as to have children) since temperature in stomach is not proper temperature for the testicles so I wouldn't wait !!I would go to pediatric urologist right away and have sonogram to see where the testicles are and then if surgery is,needed to bring them down , its a small surgery for which ur son goes home that day!!
I went to a great Dr In long island (I don't know where u live or wat insurance u hav) anyway after surgery hopefully the testicles start to develop properly which if it does, then ur son has regular fertility!!! I know some ppl. Here said they waited until 3 yrs! I don't recommend that since waiting too long may damage, the testicles and then may be less chance of regular fertility!! (my opinion after researching how important its for testicles to be in proper environment)
. Good luck. I hope ur son can have this corrected with regular fertility!

never experienced this myself - however, I do know a loverly kid born w/o visible testicles & who grew up to have many children

imho this is not something you wait & see ... you are your son's best advocate - get 2nd & 3rd opinions with professionals

good luck !!!

While they used to wait until 3+ years to treat this, the recommendation now is by age 1. I think that fertility and possible cancer risk are the reasons.
My ds was about 1.5 years and the doctor was pretty pressured to get it done. It is not considered a difficult surgery. DS is now monitored every year by the pediatrician. When he reaches adolescence, we were told to see a urologist.

Peds nurse here. It seems that people are confusing 2 different things. Completely undescended testicles at this point would NOT be normal and would require further evaluation. Retractile testes, on the other hand (explained what that is in prev post) is still totally normal at this age and usually resolve. OP indicated that her child has retractile testes. If the child is a few years old and still has retractile testes, your ped would likely refer you to a urologist at that point.

I disagree salmon, I don't see anywhere where op says they are retractable! Op started the thread stating that the Dr. Mentioned u descended testicles. She said her Dr. Was not concerned.
. however, it seems this Dr. Is the PCP. The PCP is not as knowledgeable in the best way to "treat this". A pediatric urologist should be seen!!
. Later in the thread, op said she thinks she saw them!! Maybe op was thinking this due to what you said.
. However, I didn't see anywhere that the Dr. Said it's retracting. I don't think that op should take a chance and say "its probably retracting". I agree with greenfire that op shouldn't wait. I think op should go to a specialist and make sure it's retracting. If it really is undescended, it must be treated as soon as possible for best results.
. op, I hope you will take your son to a specialist. If it's not in the stomach, they may still need to be moved surgically since they may be in the canal. I would not take a chance. Anything can happen in a month such that a sonogram can help see where the testicles are now. How do you know they didn't move to the stomach?
. My son had undescended testicles and there were times that I thought I saw the testes. I told myself that the testes were retracting. I WAS WRONG! I hope you take your son to a specialist to confirm. It would also be a good idea to get a sonogram to confirm exactly where the testes are. The urologist did a sonogram in his office.

there is a higher risk for cancer too not just infertility in undescended testicles and the risk doesn't go down even after surgery, so these boys should be told that if they notice anything unusual to get it checked.
