Can anyone tell me from experience what specifically does a kriah specialist do? What is the training to become a kriah specialist? I am thinking of taking my child to one and any information you can give would be helpful.
Also, can anyone highly recommend one in or near Passaic?

I don't think there is any specific requirement to hang out your shingle as a "kriah specialist." An English literacy specialist is a formal license you can get in many places but kriah is free for all. The implied meaning is that the provider has a higher level of training and experience in teaching Hebrew reading, especially to people who have a harder time with it. So they would do many different types of activities to help students master kriah skills. Not sure what you mean by wanting specifics.

The child is 10 and has been practicing since before first grade. Of course the child can read, it's just slow and painful. I am asking if it would be useful to take an older child to a kriah specialist? I don't want to pay someone to listen to this child practice kriah. What does a kriah specialist do?
And, can anyone recommend one in the Passaic area.

Does the child read English, and if so are there similar difficulties?
Someone calling themself a kriah specialist should not just be listening to the child practice, but the actual strategy would depend on what the problem is. If the child is reading well in English but not Hebrew, they would probably need to be taught or re-taught the phonics rules, perhaps with more multi-sensory activity and different "tricks" to make it easier. If the difficulty is in both, there might be other issues involved such as visual coordination or auditory processing.

Does your school have someone on staff? We have people in our schools who pull out kids who need help. No extra charge. OOT.

There is someone at the school, but I wanted to see if it was worth looking into some extra help. He knows what to do and the "rules" of how to read but he is already big and his kriah is not good. We have done tons of practice and the improvement is painfully slow.

Check out www.torah4children.com/seder-kriah for the Seder Kriah remedial version which is perfect for children with Kriah difficulties. It works like a specialist in a workbook but can be used by anyone.
