or that type of flavor?

This is somewhat a spinoff of the Gordon Ramsey post. The poster asked about star anise. One answer reminded me of a besamin my parents got in Israel that has star anise in it among other scents. One of the scents is black licorice and, sorry, but yuck!!

I see someone posted this question already, but it was from 2009, so I'm leaving it up.

Black licorice candy: Not at all. Tastes like shoe polish.

Anise or fennel seeds in food: Sometimes; depends on the recipe.

Apparently I used to like it as a young child, but I had some on a plane once and got sick. Ever since then I can't stand even the smell of it.

As a side note, I like basil a lot but occasionally it reminds me a bit of anise/licorice and I have to consciously talk myself into not feeling repulsed.

I don't see the connection between basil and black licorice at all. I love cooking with basil, mostly in pestos....and won't touch black licorice.

I don't mind it, but it's not my favorite. I don't eat around the black jelly beans and occasionally I'm specifically in the mood for it.

I haven't tried it in savory food, other than fennel among crudites, since dh doesn't like it. Sounds interesting.

I remember reading that this flavor has been shown to pass through the placenta, and there's some evidence that you're more likely to like it if your mother ate it while pregnant with or nursing you. I make sure to have it a few times in the second-third trimesters in hopes my kids will like it Smile

Thai basil has an anise flavor. it's a bit pointier than regular basil leaves but they look pretty similar.

I like it, but not too much of it. I like it the way I like jalapeƱos. Sometimes, in small doses, for an interesting change to shock the tastebuds.

Oh my gosh NO! Not in any way, shape, or form. Just the smell makes me physically ill. It always has. All the Sephardim at my old shul drank arak, and I couldn't even stand near the kiddush table. Puke

I don't really go for the texture of licorice at all.
Black- I don't like the taste, nor do I like the smell.
