I always assumed that prednisone and prednisolone are the same thing, but I don't know.

My dd has been prescribed prednisolone (oral steroid) for asthma, but I know oral prednisone is prescribed for croup.

I don't know much about treating croup, but my understanding of asthma based on dd is that there are 2 parts to it: maintenance, and emergencies.

For maintenance, she uses the inhaler once or twice a day, depending on the time of year. That's qvar.

Whereas, albuterol is more for an instantaneous type of assistance, if she's having an asthma attack. Obviously at that point I'd call the dr. for direction. B"H' the maintenance regimen has been very helpful in cutting down on attacks.

As others have said, croup sounds like a barking cough.

Wheezing may be hard to hear before you get used to it, but here are 2 symptoms I learned to look out for, for asthma attacks: uncharacteristic lethargy. She'd just lay on the couch and act
uninterested in communicating or moving. And if she was lying on her back and you pick up her shirt and look at her stomach, her stomach seemed to get sucked in with every breath, and this was involuntary on her part.

The specialist I went to was an allergist-immunologist.

I didn't read through the posts so sorry if I answer what others answered. Firstly I would tell you go to a good Pulminologist. It's really important. They can hear slight differences. I have a child who I assumed was getting croup so often, which ended up being asthma. And he also got it when he got colds or fever. The Pulminologist can prescribe what's best for your child that works to prevent sudden asthma attacks like this. Also sometimes asthma can be related to allergies- seasonal or food, but I'm sure the Pulminologist would guide you if he felt you need to go to an allergist.
