dhs birthday is 9/20/78 can someone help me figure out how much he will be turnining tommorrow? I have this argument with him every year how old he is and what he is turning. its the biggest joke. but I want to prove to him I know what I am talking about. so I think he is turning 39. what do you guys think? lets see if I did my calculations correct.

I am so embarrassed. I just dont know why I made a mistake last year. and made him one year older.

I started calculating from 79 and calculated that way.

He'll be turning 38.

You just take the year 2016 and subtract the year 1978. (2016-1978=38)

I am also very bad in basic math .... but I guess this is one thing I do know : )

why don't you believe him when he tells you how old he will be?

no no I didnt mean to say I dont believe him.
its just that he himself is also bad at basic math just like me (maybe even worse) so we both just dont know. I at least think I know he at least tells me he really doesnt know. its just this funny thing going on every year his birthday comes around and we just laugh about it. my mother in law also says she lost count once dh turned 30. now she says she doesnt know. I guess shes bad at math too. so thanks. what do you all think? I just want to tell dh that I finally figured it out. I just need to tell him that a certain amount of people say the same. maybe that will convince him.

In 1979 he turned 1. That means he finished his first year. You do not include the day he was born as a "birthday" when calculating age.

In 1988 he turned 10
In 1998 he turned 20
In 2008 he turned 30
Now count each year: in 2009 he turned 31...

in some countries such as iran, they count 0-1 as the first year - as well as when we say tehillim we daven the perek up again because we officially start the next year in age - I.e. I am a complete 53 years old but in my 54th year ...

but not in america ... so stick with basic subtraction as stated above - or count on your fingers & toes even if you have to borrow someone else's

If he was born in 78 then he'll be 40 in 2018. So this year he turns 38. Happy birthday!

It's the same in India I believe. When a child is born they say he is 1. But that is going to confuse you, op.
