I'm working on my Yom Tov menus and would love to try some new and exciting side dishes. I have good veggie and sweet sides (like fruit kugels and muffins, salads, vegetable dishes, etc.) but could use some new starchy and savory sides (like potatoes or orzo/pasta salads).
I like to cook and freeze as much as possible, and with so many meals coming up and a lot of work deadlines on top of it all, I need to plan ahead. Right now my standby is doughless potato knish (already on the menu!), so seeking recipes like that. I will make some fresh potato dishes on Yom Tov but would prefer freezable dishes.
I don't mind a patchke, but not too much.
So... all suggestions welcome!
TIA!

Thanks! I've never tried freezing orzo. I just got the new Mishpacha recipe supplement and am hoping to find some ideas in there.

Thank you! flowerpower, how do you make orzo & pastrami? Sounds delicious. Usually I just cook the orzo and toss it with sauteed onions and peppers, olive oil, and seasonings.

I will be the dissenter on the orzo. I think it is kind of mushy when reheated. Sorry.

I find only the egg noodle orzo freezes well (heimish chuster brand). The pasta orzo (ronzoni brand) does not freeze nicely.
Same for the cabbage & noodles dish made with bow ties. Only the egg noodle bow ties freeze and reheat well.

I usually freeze the sautéed veggies and prepare the orzo fresh.

I love cabbage and noodles. I usually cook and freeze the cabbage in advance and then make a pot of pasta the morning of erev yomtov.

If you consider cabbage more starchy, I made these a few shabbosim ago and they were very good.

Instead of frying them, I filled muffin tins with the cabbage mixture and baked it at 400 for 20 min or so. They came out great.
