I weigh my flour for challah.
When I buy in bulk and split with a friend.
To settle a dispute with dh!
When a recipe calls for 2lb potatoes.
I tried for a newborn, but it wasn't big enough.

Potato Kugel (I adjust recipe to how many lbs I have)
Challah (I sift 12 bags at a time and then prepare them in 5 lb bags)
Meat recipes (cook x amount of time per lb.)
Chicken cutlets (to figure out how much to use for a meal)
Any time a recipe says x amount of x. Ex. 12 oz noodles and my bags come in 14 oz.

Baking, mostly.
Any recipe that would work best with precise measurements.

I use mine 6 times a day. Uk recipes usually come with weights eg 150gr of sugar so I use it for that. (much prefer it to israeli or us recipes which go by cups and I am never quite sure what cup size - seperate cups for dry or wet ingredients? same size cup for everything?
I use a challah recipe that has 6lbs of flour and my flour comes in 1.5kg bags.
I weigh food that I am eating to make sure portions are not too big.

For potatoes to make potato kugel, because potatoes come in so many different sizes, I feel that you can't really go by the number of potatoes in the recipe.

Pieces of dough before rolling out and braiding challah so that each challah comes out to be the same size.
Ground meat and chicken cutlets that come in large packages so I can divide and freeze them in proper meal amounts.
Meat portions for myself so I know how much I'm eating (I don't find chicken necessary since I can just eat 1 chicken leg quarter or 1 side of chicken breast and know that it's a proper portion without weighing).

So how much should each potato weigh? I use six potatoes in my recipe and sometimes comes out different because of the size of potato.

I mainly use it when making bread and pizza dough. I'll also use it if a recipe calls for a veggie weight. The other main time I use it is to get even sized hamburger patties. I cover it in plastic wrap and weigh the raw meat.

When I'm dieting I use it to portion things out for myself. Once in a while I will pull it out to see if the stores are being honest (weighing meat, produce sold by weight, etc.). Also every once in a blue moon for a recipe that I have to measure things by weight that I would normally measure by cups.

DH sometimes uses it to see how much he needs to eat to make a kazayit.
Challah, other baking uses.
Diets.
If you go to Marshallahs you can usually find a good scale for about $20.
It's useful to have, but not necessary.

I weigh the strands of dough when making challah so I get even sized challos.
I'll also weigh chocolate for use in a recipe.
But mostly for challah. I wouldn't be able to make challah without it!

I use it to mail packages. I can plug exact weight into usps website and print out shipping labels.

I was thinking about buying one for when I make challah. What brand do you have? About how much does it cost?

Another challah baker here - I use the Escali Primo scale, about $25. I like it because it has a high enough weight limit for most recipes, small enough increments for weighing things like salt and baking powder, a display which is somewhat forward from the platform so I can see it when a bowl is on top, and easy switching between metric and non-metric measurements.
