Anyone ever make apple sauce in a crock pot for Shabbos day?

I have too many non-cholent eaters and I was thinking of skipping cholent occasionally, but I still want something hot, somewhat liquidy and thick - like cholent without actually being cholent.

I saw some crockpot applesauce recipes online, but will it be ok for 18 hrs. in the crock pot (on low the whole time) instead of the 4-6 recommended in the recipe?

My family would be mighty annoyed if the main hot course on Shabbat was applesauce.

How about a hearty vegetable soup in the crock pot? Root vegetables will withstand a very long cooking time. You can round that out with cold sliced chicken and cold sliced roast, so people will get enough protein, but that way you'll have something hot and filling as well.

I've tried it and burned my applesauce Sad

Even on low, the maximum I can get it to cook is 10-11ish hours, not 15+.

Hm, doesn't sound too encouraging. I have a "low" setting, but I'm guessing that's higher than "warm." "Low" is what I keep my cholent on from shortly before Shabbos starts until we eat it.

What if I do it in a crock pot liner with plenty of water in the crock pot? Think it might work?

A few of my kids are going to friends for Shabbos lunch this week, and the ones who will be home are not my cholent eaters. They're the kids who eat fruit and go for sweet kugels, so that's why I was thinking homemade applesauce might work as a warm, yummy side...

Following QueenBee's suggestion, a sweet tzimmes with carrots and pineapples might withstand 15 hours of cooking and would probably be sweet enough for your kids.

Another vote for vegetable soup. Applesauce doesn't seem much like a main dish.

What is it about cholent that they don't like??
My kids prefer parve cholent. I alternate between parve and fleishig cholent. Even my very very fussy eaters will eat the parve cholent. And I know they've had something solid.

Applesauce is more of a desert to wash down the main dish. I definitely vote for a veg soup or parve cholent or something like that.
Applesauce will spoil so many hours in crockpot, don't forget it's a delicate food.

you can make chicken and rice in the crock pot, I've done it many times.

equal amounts rice and water, salt. stir. spread chicken pieces over as much of the rice as possible (leave the skin on) and spice. cover, cook. I have done this friday morning and switched the crock pot to warm right before shabbos. check to find out if your crock pot will maintain a safe temperature on a warm setting. otherwise, keep it low and set it up right before shabbos.
