as a SAHM having space both inside and outside the house is very important but I can understand that it's different if both parents work and kid is in day care...

I think if both parents work very far from home that is tough - especially if there is a sick child to pick up, a performance, etc.
Plus the wear and tear on the parent from traveling and the extra child care needed for travel time.

I agree that another key factor is whether both parents work out of the house and need to commute. If one stays home, the longer commute is often more doable for the family.

There are so many factors to consider.
Short commute vs bigger house is very simplistic. What kind of community do you want to live in and raise your children in? What are the schools like? Are there shuls and peer groups that you would be comfortable joining? Are you moving away from family? Is that a pro or a con? What kind of support system are you used to and will you be able to build a new one or do without?
Do either you or your husband have any flexibility in your jobs? Are you organized people who can get everyone out of the house in the morning without major stress? Would commuting be an added stress or a chance to decompress and switch gears between work and home? Can one of you switch to a more local job or work from home occasionally?
