Until now I've been freelancing.

I might get a steady job that includes translating (poems as well, so it's a bit more work).

If I'm asked what I charge, I honestly don't know what to say.

Thoughts?

I should think poetry should be at least twice that.

A good beginner can charge $25/hr for freelance work, but if it's full time expect to make less than that.

It shouldn't matter if it's poetry or something else, when it goes by time.

I feel that writing can't be charged by hour. Sometimes, the words flow, whereas other times it can take a while. So an hourly rate isn't very consistent with the work.

I did freelance editing, translating and writing (mostly copy) for years at @ $35-50/hr. Then a frum org hired me to ghost-write a series of books. I make $300/chapter, research (lots!) and editing input included. There are some extras now that we're wrapping up Book I, such as additional fact checking/research (that they were going to hire out, but I offered to do) plus some rewriting and additional content for which I got paid 25/hr. Altogether, it amounts to about 20c a word, which is a decent rate, I think.

If I were in your position, I think I would ask to be paid per word, but a bit less for regular translating and a bit more for poetry.

Thanks, seafoam.
I'll add for OP that if you count all the hours I put in, it's quite measely compared to my regular freelancer's rate. But I love the work, it's constant but somewhat flexible, the bosses and editors are phenomenal, and best of all, I don't have to chase down the money!

Then you are very definitely a beginner and shouldn't be charging much.
