We are planning on using the name Malka but we already have a niece Malkie and another close family member Malka. (But we are the first to name for this Malka) My "worry" is grandparents and others won't "get" the nickname... anyone have this nickname for themselves or their daughter and want to help out?

I know 3 Malka's who are named Molly - some Molly, some Mali.

How is possible to not "get" a nickname? I don't get that.

It's sweet of you to care about them, at the end of the day, you're the one living with your child, not them.

Adorable. Also Mollie/Molly might be good if you want a spelling that is understood in the secular world. B'sha'ah Tova!

My grandmother never heard of several of the names of her great-grandchildren (think: she's Hungarian and we've given "modern" or Israeli names)
She's gotten to used to all of them.

I know a few Mali's or Molly's who are Malka.

There are no rules about nicknames.

If we ever used the name Malka (a family name) it could be we would call the child Molly. That's what my grandmother was called, Molly for Malka. I do like using Jewish names though, so I would have to decide if and when we decided to use it.

I think you should do whatever you want! Worst case scenario the grandparents will call the child Malka and everyone else will call her Mali. That's not unheard of.
Chances are though that they'll end up using whatever name you use.
(I must admit, I also see absolutely no problem in using the name Malky even though a cousin has the same name. It's common for cousins to have the same name. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.)

There isn't really but we like being a little original and our association of Malky is with that Malky.
