I can't name my son for my mother who passed away recently but I was thinking of using a name meaning comfort, such as Nochum, Nachman, Menachem. DH is not such a fan of any of these names but says if it really means that much to me, it would be fine with him. So what do I do? Give a comfort name that DH not thrilled about but will go ahead and do for me, or choose a different name entirely that we both like?

I know people who give names which they feel represent the essence of a person. If you felt your mother was exceptionally caring or compassionate you could give a name along those lines.

I read somewhere that Akiva can be used as a comfort name, as Rabbi Akiva was able to comfort the Tannaim during the Churban, so the name is synonymous with comfort.
"Akiva Nechamtani"
