We have such a simple tax return this year - literally 1 w2 and 1 1099-int. I am considering filing it myself online somehow and saving the cost of an accountant.
I used to work as a junior accountant (no degree) so I know how it works and what to look out for but I don't know if there are any nuances from that last few years.
Would you recommend? Have you done it? Any specific program you would use? Any advice?

Anyone want to do it for me for a very fair price? it probably takes 10 minutes max.

I did it last year with absolutely zero experience. Could not have been easier. My husband hadn't had a chance to get to it and it was the day before due. Used the famous program And itemized.

There's also TaxAct. I did it myself in 15 minutes the other night.

For those that use turbo tax - do you feel like you get your Earned Income Credit and child care credits properly?
I'm almost convinced Smile

I've used Taxact, and done my taxes myself, for years.

It's me the OP. I sat down and did my taxes tonight. TurboTax wants $75 at the end of the day.. 35 because it claims I need a 1040 as opposed to a 1040A and 38 to file state tax return. (And a little tax! ) do you think TaxACT will be any cheaper? Once I'm spending 75... I didn't think it would be this much

Do you agree with the software claim that you need to file a 1040 and not a 1040A? The software is not a tax adviser. If you need to file a state return, you need to file a state return, regardless of software package.

I definitely need a state return. I don't know why it wants 1040 and not 1040A. I have a pretty simple return. No schedules a,b,c,d,e,

if you are below 100K no business income, not taking itemized deductions - you should be able to do a 1040A. If you are below 64K consider using https://www.irs.gov/uac/free-f.....-free

Are you itemizing your taxes or using standard deduction? I think that is the common diff between 1040 and 1040a. I filed by paper by myself for years - I am not in accounting field at all but managed. Last year used turbotax and plan to again.

Not itemizing. Under 65k. Really not sure why it's pushing 1040 and not 1040A. Just to charge me?

I can't answer that for you. But I wouldn't pay.

If it's under 65k then it should be free to file your taxes with one of those programs no matter what kind of return it is. But you need to make sure that you're going into the website through the right link.

Google "free e-file low income"
