Well, I wasn't grossed out before reading this thread, but now I sure am! Smile

I always bring along my own pillowcase - I usually bring two to cover the pillow really well.

As long as the room and linen smell fresh and clean, and the carpet isn't dusty, knotty, or has water stains and brown/black spots of gunk, I'm good...

What I hate is eating on china/reusable plates when I go to kosher hotels. I usually end up eating in restaurants with disposable dishes, rather than eating on china and silverware that have been used by thousands of people before me and put into their mouths repeatedly. Yes, I know I wouldn't want to see the kitchens, but out of sight, out of mind....

Is staying at other people's homes diffrent?

I would think hotels are cleaner and all is sterile, or so I would hope ...

They're definitely not sterile.
Did no one here watch the clip of a televison station going to different nice hotels and proving that the linen is not changed between guests?

I have stayed in homes with not fresh sheets. Once there was a used nightgown under the pillow. What is there to do in that situation?

Yes this - thanks.
It makes me never want to go to a hotel again.

I stopped eating at weddings when I saw a cockroach crawl across the table at a high end wedding hall. I have friends that would only use plastic cups at simchas . I thought that they're neurotic but now I'm the same way.

The hotel I stayed on my wedding night (supposedly a 4 star hotel) was awful. I didn't have clean sheets, there were blood stains on it!!! Ick, ick, ick! Really gross!!!

I've been hotel-phobic for years! When I do stay at one I do loads of research and check the bedbug registry. I also bring my own pillow n blanket. Another thing I bring is disinfecting wipes! I wipe door knobs, light switches, faucets....

No. You all sound a tad spoilt- I love going to hotels though it's a little too expensive for us at the moment.

In recent years, bedbugs have been a real problem even at nice hotels. I never put anything down on the carpet, and I untuck the blankets to see if there is anything visible on the mattress.

Some of the answers here strike me as slightly neurotic.

This.
Hotels are my happy place. I get easily grossed out from little things, but a lot of the suggestions here are a little extreme. The only things I'm careful with are the bedspreads and the carpeting.

I've seen good bad & ugly [even smelly] ... either way not something I make a habit of doing

but sometimes one room is gross & they can move you & that room is actually good [not sure about the bedbugs though]

I'm totally with Maya and DrMom on this. Unless there's something specific and noticeable, I don't think much about it. I mean, it's not as if my own house is such a bastion of cleanliness . . .

exactly. I'm pretty sure they changed the linen more often than I do at home
