The linen smells fine but I feel like I should wash it first and then I think that's crazy because it's new and clean!

There are often finishing agents on brand new textiles so washing it first removes them and can soften the fabric.

When linens, towels, or any other fabrics are new, you don't wash them because they are "dirty", you wash them because of the chemicals used in the manufacturing process. There's sizing, starch, bleach, and who knows what else?

I won't even let DD put on a new t-shirt until I've washed it first. She knows that all new clothes go straight to the laundry room. (She ruined a brand new wool skirt that way once. It came out 3 sizes too small. Confused Check the labels!)

My mom taught me that, so that's what we do.

I always do, washing them first with cold water (in the washing machine don't worry, not by hand Wink )
When you don't they get very hard and stiff after the first wash.

As someone who manufactured clothing I would wash everything.
You dont know how dirty some of the factories are.

Never thought twice about it. I don't buy new that often but always just put them on...

What about a suit that needs dry cleaning and can't be washed by yourself?

I never thought of washing before. If it's stiff I will otherwise no.

I always wash linens and towels before use.

Some clothing I also wash beforehand, such as baby clothing or underwear.

Thanks for reminding me to wash my new teal blue towel. I once washed new red bibs with other towels, and ruined the stuff for good!!
Linen I would wash before using. All the folded creases will come out. Dry for 3 minutes and put right onto beds! Enjoy.

Absolutely. I've seen where the rolls of material are stored before they're sewn into linen. If you had seen them too, you'd feel the same. Smile

I was taught to wash 4 things before using; towels, linen, panties, bathing suits.
Most other things that are not used so close to sensitive areas and the face, I leave alone. We actually love that new look and feel of regular clothing.

Always. Textiles are treated with substances to handle well and make them look good in the package. You don't know what it was exposed to in the factory, or in shipping and storage.

Always, and for new flannel sheets I wash them and add vinegar to the rinse and hang to dry, that keeps them from pilling.
