My kids have been asking for sushi, and we get it once in a while but it's costly.
Is it easy to make at home? Is it cheap? I am referring to vegetable rolls, not ones with actual fish.

Where do you buy the black paper thingy (what's it called?) ?

What are the steps?

Thanks!

There's a lot of steps and makes some mess but if you're prepared and have the time it's pretty simple and fun to do with the kids.
The thing you're asking about is nori aka seaweed. Available at the supermarket in a clear flat plastic package.

Hi,

I make sushi at home all the time. I love vegetarian sushi, so you definitely don't need fish. The things you DO need are:

For the sushi:
Japanese short grain rice
Seasoned rice vinegar to flavor the rice
Nori, which is the seaweed wrapper

For the dip:
You also need soy sauce for dipping, Wasabi (the green spicy horseradish), which I like to mix into the soy sauce, and some pickled ginger if you like its taste

You can put anything inside: avocado, cucumber, sweet potato, bell pepper, fake crab (Kani or surimi sticks, but it is made out of Fish), carrots, fried tofu, pickled Daikon radish, seaweed salad, etc. Regardless of what I put in my sushi, I like to have avocado inside.

There are numerous tutorials on how to make it. Be careful when cutting it though. It's difficult and I prefer a serated knife.

Enjoy!

We make it all the time, I let my kids make it and they love it. Its not necessarly as pretty as the store but tastes delicious.

I bought a simple sushi mat years ago and we use it all the time and it came with a great recipe and instructions that I follow. I cover with saran wrap to make clean up easier.

Ingredients:
Sushi Rice (you can use regular but I find this easy)
Rich Vinegar
Salt
Sugar
Nori Sheets - sold in all local groceries where I live
Vegetables - carrots, English or Persian cucumbers, avocado

Helpful tools (not required):
Sushi mat
julienne peeler
Saran Wrap

Cook sushi rice according to directions.
Season with rice vinegar, salt and sugar. (mix gently so not to smooth the rice grains.)
Place saran wrap over the sushi map (this just makes cleanup easier).
julienne the carrots and cucumbers or cut into thin strips
Cut avocado into thin strips.
Cut nori sheet in half and place on sushi mat
Spread some rice in thin layer over mat
Flip mat
Place a small amount of veggies across. Roll and slice with a sharp knife.
You can roll the roll in pretty sesame seeds if you like before slicing.
If making in advance wrap the roll in saran wrap and slice before serving.

you can try but I don't think it will work out too well. You need the rice to be sticky

It needs to be short grain sushi rice otherwise it won't stick.

I just want to say that if you aren't super patient and don't have the proper tools, it's NOT easy. It's not impossible, but it's definitely complicated.

I like to make sushi salad - just throw everything into a bowl and serve. It's a big hit and it is EASY.

Would your kids go for that?
