Some ppl, feel they can express themselves better with poetry.... In school we had to keep a journal, I'd say more than half of mine was in poetry... I also wrote it for my year boom and for fun, bc it was easier for me

Then chances are you are one of the minority of people who are good at it. If only the people who are good at it would produce Purim verse, there would be no backlash. The hostility comes from folks who appreciate good verse and are deluged year after year by doggerel of the worst kind.

What offends me is not the verse so much as the people who are not poetically blessed who come on board asking for others to do their homework for them so that they can pass it off as their own. I wouldn't ask you to bake a cake and pass it off as mine, why ask me to rhyme a rhyme and pass it off as thine?

Very well said.

Most of The poetry is written so poorly, it drives me crazy. And about writing other people's poems...
My whole extended family has no problem calling me up to write poetry for them for any occasion. It really annoys me, because they act like it's no big deal...

Listen folks, just listen up,
Your driving me crazy in my "kup"
If you haven't got the knack,
To write poems 'bout your Purim snack,
Leave it alone, just let it go,
I'll still be friends with you, you know.

In fact the chances are far better,
If I don't ready your silly letter,
Your poetry just makes me groan,
And bang my head,
And sigh and moan.
It drives me crazy, makes me mad
And takes away my Purim "glad."

To those who think that they must write,
I'm not trying to start a fight,
And so I say with all my might,
Just think about my sorry plight!
And listen to my woeful plea,
Please don't write poor poetry!

Not true that nothing rhymes with Purim
There's "hirhurim" and "siddurim"!

(Yeah, I didn't know either - it means musings LOL )

Yissurim, hiddurim...

My fam/ neighbors and I get really into Purim Costumes themes etc. I think I maybe get one poem a year?
Why does everyone here seem to be stuck on a poem?

Hooray! In Israel we don't have to do poems!!!!!!! (At least where I live)

For some unknown reason maaany people feel this way, but most of them are wrong.

what they want to say would be a lot better expressed as prose.

Roses are reddish,
Violets are blue-ish
My peeps don't do poems.
And yet we're still Jewish!

It became a minhag. Simple as that!

Shalach Manos without a poem
Feels naked, yes, and bare
Just nosh tossed inside a basket
But they can see that you don't care.

Your truffles may be incredible
Your pie may be key lime
But it all leaves a bitter taste
Because you didn't share a rhyme.

Your costumes match your container
Nosh coordinates perfectly
But it's empty of a poem
And that lack is all they see.

For how much work could it be
To match a line or two?
To show us that Purim wish
Is meaningful and true?

For only words with rhythm
And only lines that rhyme
Became a Purim minhag
To withstand the tests of time.

The only reason they came up
With a name like "hamentash"
Is because it's a perfect rhyme
With "lots and lots of nosh."

That there is no rhyme for "Purim"?
Since ancient times we cry
We're waiting for Moshiach
So he can tell us why.

The source for this minhag
And many corny Purim puns
Is the lovely rhyming list
Of all of Haman's sons.

So push yourselves, dear friends
Don't let your Manos look undressed
Include a long [boring] poem
To prove that you're the best.

Or feel free to buck the trend
Since this minhag is still new.
As Yidden did for generations, write:
Happy Purim to You!

Purple, you rock!!! I love this! Great talent!! Why are you amother? Totally unnecessary! I want to know who you are!!!

I also don't get these poems and theme for that matter. Scratching Head

now this is a poem that actually made me smile. you should send this in your MM.

I don't get the poem "mania" either. I don't mind if people want to write one but I don't have patience to go past the first stanza unless it's captivating, like the one above.

When Adar arrives there’s a change in our lives
That causes a mega-upheaval.
I speak not of joy which we’re supposed to employ
To commemorate good versus evil.
I don’t mean gift-sharing or Seudah-preparing;
Good guess, but you’re not even close.
No, we’re busy with dreaming of how we’ll be theming
This year’s Mishloach Manos.
Gone are the days and the old-fashioned ways
Of giving out cake and a fruit.
Or a bottle of grape juice, no, we have to break loose,
See now everything must be cute.
Originality rules, imitation’s for fools;
G-d forbid we should ever repeat
What we did once before, lest we seem like a bore;
Making Purim is no easy feat.
How’s French-oriented, all finely presented
Hors d’oeuvres and a nice French Merlot.
Or Italian cuisine, here’s to the scene
That we’ll make every place that we go.
Everything red? Should we do green instead?
Maybe a rainbow design.
Items alphabetized? All the nosh oversized?
If it builds up our image it’s fine.
Or ten chocolate bars, all shaped like sports cars,
People can use those en masse.
They’re fat saturating, and artery hating,
But we need them to move up in class.
This one sounds newish: let’s try something Jewish,
Like giving out kugel and schnapps.
Nah – I’m sure it’s been done, and I’ll not be the one
To plagiarize somebody’s chapps.
Or an ocean motif, with a real coral reef,
And a miniature ship to complete it.
Add some water and sand. My won’t that look grand!
Does it matter if no one can eat it?
Now it’s not taught at school, but it’s known as a rule
That whichever theme you should choose,
Do not tell a soul, secrecy is your goal,
It’s a race, and you don’t want to lose.
And I feel I must mention with all good intention
To be wary of wandering eyes.
Then try to look smug, to all queries just shrug.
It is vital it be a surprise.
Look, we’re going through stress, cause we live to impress
Our mitzvos are not just our own biz
From our position, it’s big competition
To try to keep up with the Joneses.
I don’t mean to sound trite, but we’re fast losing sight
Of the purpose of giving two minim.
Let’s learn that what’s latest is not always greatest
And themes aren’t part of the dinim.
It’s clearly a crime, all the money and time
That we waste on this fleeting obsession.
So with refreshed resources, let’s retrack our courses
To genuine Purim perfection.

I prepared a Purim Shpiel for my kids one year. No one had patience in the chaos of the day to listen.

One self-imposed duty crossed off my list forevermore, bli neder.

Why throw poems at folks' homes when they cannot endure 'em.
Just relax, send out snacks and a freilechen purim!

Haikus are better
I don't get the whole poem thing
Just my opinion
