I had to put my cat down last week after having her for 15 years.
Most people were sympathetic but some asked me why I was so upset about a cat because it's not a human.

Sorry for your loss. Many people just don't understand how important a pet is to people.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Having to put down a beloved pet was one of the hardest experiences of my life. Anyone who downplays your grief because they can't personally relate is an insensitive clod.

Here's a poem that my mom shared recently when her dog died; I found it very moving and accurately portraying the feeling of an empty hole being left behind when a pet dies:

After the Dog's Death (by Jill Stein)
Without that steady hum
which ran beneath our lives,
the silence startles us.
The living room rattles.
No soothing rhythms of
her sleeping breaths
ferry us softly through the hours.
The band of sunlight which
held her on these winter afternoons
travels alone across the bare oak floor.
The love seat where she napped,
once sun had left
is a boat hull adrift.
Her needs were trailheads
into the vast plains of day.
She mapped our lives,
made sense of our small gestures,
affirmed our goodness with her gratitude.
We say we're glad she didn't suffer much.
We say we'd like to die so gently, head in lap,
and softly lulled to sleep,
but we're not fooled.
It's ourselves we cosseted in loving her.
We're lost inside her absence
dwarfing us in its enormous space.

Please don't give such people a second thought. They obviously have their brain in their a*s. My sincerest condolences.

Ftr, one of the main reasons I don't buy a pet is because it's to sad when they die. Of course it's very painful to lose an animal that you love.

I'm so sorry for your loss hindas; two of my cats have died and I know all too well that losing a human loved one is very different, nevertheless losing a much loved pet is a bit like losing a member of the family
That's my opinion anyway.

I am really sorry. How can one not be sympathetic? Besides the pleasure of the companionship (not all cats are Garfield) there's the theme of the Kuntres Hachesed: we love that which we invest in. (Even inanimate objects - think of Yona's disappointment with the kikayon.) How could you not be in distress? Hugs!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your cat was lucky to spend nine lives with you, and you were equally fortunate to have the chance to experience 15 years of kitty-love. (((Hugs)))

I would edit to add: what Sadie said about having to put down a pet.
I haven't had pets, but I remember what a very chashuve posek said in seminary: he would have loved to have pets, it would have been an incredible chinuch experience for his children.
And now you've had to learn and be mekayem the sugya of tzaar baalei chayim. This must have been so difficult for you, and I hope you have menucha, and simcha soon.

I'm sorry if all the frumspeak is jarring, but it's where I'm coming from, and it's what makes it so clear to me that you have a right to be upset, especially with it just last week, not to mention the weeks or months leading up to it.

I don't have pets and I don't understand the feeling of having one.
But I do understand that you are sad now even though I don't fully understand why or how.
Hugs to you!

Hindas, I'm so sorry. Our animals are very much a part of our lives and how we spend them. Let your memories comfort you.
