catonmylap, I totally know what you mean about jsut getting to the halacha! Whenever dh tries to tell me something interesting he is learning I always ask "so what bracha do we make in that situation" and then when he says they haven't gotten there yet "What do you mean you haven't gotten there yet!! It's been a week, sheesh."

We were taught Ein Yaacov in Sem, it was optional, not learned inside, and wonderful! Especially the bits about the fetus' life in the womb, made pregnancy mesh into Judaism in a whole different way!

Between my husband's approach (very interesting mix of Brisker analysis and a historical perspective) and my father's approach (much more traditional sit-down-and-learn, less analytical).

I think my husband is more on the right track in making sense of the gemara as a cohesive set of books, but my father's quantitative knowledge is ridiculously good.

Is that a problem?
