Hi, I wanted to know if someone can suggest a very good psychologist that specializes in autism spectrum disorders.
I have a very intelligent child, but he is socially awkward and I'm afraid he is being misunderstood by his teachers. I feel bad for him because he is such a sweet kid and a good boy and the teachers constantly misinterpret his intentions.
For example, the teacher though he was pushing another kid in line, and when I questioned him about it he said he didn't like the kids being too close to him so he just wanted to walk ahead because it made him uncomfortable. He is in speech therapy, and the speech therapist has suggested that he might have high functioning autism.
The teacher doesn't understand why he takes so long to do his class assignments, and it's all because he gets distracted. Despite that, he is the best student in his class and gets the highest scores each year.
So I am looking for a good psychologist to evaluate him.
Any suggestions? NY or Brooklyn area.

What you want to ask for is the name of a good developmental pediatrician or neuropsychologist. In the meantime, as there is often a wait of many months from first contact to evaluation, I can suggest a book.
Not only did we as parents find "Breaking the Behavior Code" very helpful, but it really made a difference to either summarize the relevant points for DS's teachers, or have them read it.

Hatzlacha! I hope you get some answers soon!
