Usually I'm against creative spelling, but...

I like the name Ora but not the way it is typically spelled in English. Is it too "out there" to spell it "Aura" in English?

I know several people who use this spelling. I don't think it's "out there" at all

They are pronounced differently, so if you want it to be pronounced Ora, you should spell it Ora.

I think "creative spellings" are just asking for trouble.

I would pronounce them differently (OH-ra and AW-ra).

But I do like the look of Aura. It reminds me of Aurora.

Growing up, my BFF was Ora and it was pronounced AW-ra. Like Ohr-a.

"Aura" seems "new age-y" to me.

Blech. This is another "creative spelling" that looks odd.

I like aurora, but if I read the name Aura I would think the parents were suuuuper flakey because of its associations. You know that idea that everyone has a different color aura that emanates around them? I would think that's what the kid is named for. And that her full name was probably Indigo Aura Light.

I used to know someone who was Ora, both her Hebrew name and what she went by. Her legal name was Aurora so I guess many people probably just saw "Ora" as a nickname but not too strange. Please don't inflict creative spellings on children- they're the ones who'll be constantly spelling their name for the rest of their lives. Go wear mismatched socks if you need to feel unique.

I know at least one person who spells it like that, it's not all that crazy or "new age-y" - just be prepared to have to correct (frum) people on the spelling fairly often.

Thanks for all your replies. I get the "new age-y" concern and that does bother me a little bit. I just really like the name spelled "Aura" more than "Ora." I personally just think it's prettier. I would consider giving the English name "Aurora" even though I'd rather stick to just Hebrew.

Question for those of you named Ora (or those of you with friends/siblings/etc. named Ora)... do you like your name? Do you get jokes or confusion about "oral" or "Oprah?"
