My husband is planning on taking my son to Eretz Yisroel soon for his hanachas tefillin. He plans on taking him to kever Rochel and M'aras hamachpelah. I'm really nervous. Is it safe to go there nowadays? On a different note, any suggestions of places they should go? Thanx.

Kever rochel is okay with a bus. Meras hamachpeilah is not! You have to go with the army its open only certain days. I'm serious he should not go there without the army. (Btw I am Israeli)

I beg to differ. I also live here in Israel and there is a bus that goes directly to maarat hamachpeila and it is open every day except for a select few days a year when its open exclusively to the arabs because it is their holiday.
381 and 383 go directly there.

You do not need army escort to go if you go with a tour group. Lots of private tour busses go regularly from Yerushalayim. It's not easily accessible by public transportation. You'd have to take a bus to Kiryat Arba and from there walk or drive with army escort.

The Mearah is open and accessible from 4 am to 9pm every day. Ten days of the year, the entire complex is open only to Jews, and ten days a year it's open entirely to Muslims. It's also open only to Muslims on Fridays in Ramadan (which is Sivan this year). Otherwise it's shared.

Yes, you need to be careful, but it's well worth the trip.

ETA: I didn't know about the busses that Shabbat posted, thanks for the update.

Im not sure what you know or dont know, but I know differently that there are buses that go directly to the meara. And you do not need the army to take you.
Where were you getting this info from?

Be very careful. You definitely need the army.

There is an Egged bus to Mearas Hamachpelah. I have taken it and I would not be scared to take it again. There is tons of security in the area.

If they want a great tour, I recommend Simcha Hochbaum's tour of Chevron: https://hebronfund.org/tour

I am an American and I was just there a few months ago.

I did go with a tour group to both and I felt safe enough not to feel scared. Maybe I am naive but I really didnt see anyone that I thought was a threat.

If they go with a tour guide it should be fine not to say that it is 100% safe but safe enough to go. Nothing is 100% safe. My daughter went to the twin towers a couple of days before they were hit we thought that was safe.

I live in Brooklyn. I went to Israel 2 months ago with my husband and 3 little kids. We took the bus that was mentioned above 381 I believe it was from tachana hamerkazit. You can find the bus schedule on the egged website. Goes right in front of me'arat hamachpeilah and there was a chayal on the bus and chayalim right outside. It seemed fine. I would say you should go.Just make sure you taking bus to me'arat hamachpeilah and not the one that just goes to Kiryat Arbah.
