What is the going rate for a freelance bookkeeper?

I do freelance bookkeeping for the same client for many years and I have not asked for an increase in my rate for a long time.

What I do
Payroll
bills
banking
monitor cash flow
prepare papers for audits, accountants etc
1099's
Reports
Bottom line I am a full charge bookkeeper

What is the going hourly rate for a freelance bookkeeper in the NYC area? I generally pay for all supplies, computer, ink, some postage. I do not pay things that are specific to this job, checks, software etc.

Not sure, I do almost the things as you as a 1099 bookkeeper as well. I work remotely and have great flexibility as long as it gets done.

I make $25/hr but I technically don't have any official accounting training other than a few classes in college, everything else I learned on the job. Because of this I prob earn less, I would guess your position should command around $30/hr

I earn more then that now, I was earning $25 an hour 18 years ago. A very experienced full charge bookkeeper should be getting paid between $30 and $40 an hour and that is with a salaried job. I do have many years experience and training from CPA's.

That's between 61k- 82.5k yearly for a 40 hour week. That seems like a high salary for a regular bookkeeper.

I am not sure what the actual going rate is but I also do freelance bookkeeping that entails far less duties for $30-$35 an hour.

I'm in NYC but have/had clients from the tri-state area.

Hope this is helpful.

Bookkeeping is generally considered one step up from secretarial work.

I don't know the answer to rate- but I'd "market" you as a freelance controller. Bookkeepers aren't generally charged with monitoring cash-flow.

Not a real bookkeeper, maybe someone who knows how to use quickbooks or data entry.

A Full Charge Bookkeeper needs to know labor laws.
Know how to create a P & L
Read a Balance Sheet
Knows what are assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses and their subcategories.
Write a budget
and so much more

Wow I guess I'm being grossly underpaid. I'm an accountant, and I only make $30/hr. I only have a few years of experience, but now I'm thinking I should definitely ask for a raise!
