What would happen if I put a dry clean only suit pants in the machine on gentle cycle? It's a new suit so I don't want to ruin the pants, but I don't really want to send his pants to the cleaners all the time. Should I risk it and put in the machine?

If its not wool then yes. I always wash my boys dry cleaning only pants. (And sometimes the suit jacket too if its just polyester)

I've done it without a problem.

I washed suit pants - even wool, without a problem.
Wash gentle cycle, cold. Remove promptly and hang to dry. Might need to be steam ironed a bit.

I'd be afraid of shrinkage.
Read the label, if it says polyester or poly blend I would think its ok.
I wouldn't if it says 100% wool, it might shrink about 1 in.

It happened once in our house and they were ruined. I don't remember the details about the fabric but since then I decided that when something is dry clean only, it's not worth the the risk for me to try to wash it otherwise

I wash dry clean only stuff all the time. I found that the thicker wool fabrics tend to shrink and misshapen abit. The thinner wools are OK to wash on gentle cycle with minimal detergent. Remove promptly, hang to dry and iron. Only pants, NOT suits... they'll get ruined and misshapen. Good luck!
