I like "Inside Out" - it's really a kids animation, but it's cute & kind of gives an understanding of what's going on inside us - intermix of emotions etc.

My favorite movie - Groundhog day.
If you decide to watch it, I strongly recommend not reading any spoilers or synopsis beforehand. Discovering what's going on along with Phil was an amazing experience the first time I watched it.

Forget modern movies, rediscover the classics. Anything with Audrey Hepburn is going to be wonderful.

Also, I especially love "Bringing up Baby" with Katharine Hepburn (no relation to Audrey). It is just so funny!

People used to know how to make a good movie with showing body parts and lots of swearing.

"On the Waterfront" is a masterpiece of cinematography. Worth studying just for the camera work alone. The old Brooklyn dialog is great, too. It's what makes classics "classic".

If you like thrillers, there's always Alfred Hitchcock films. "Strangers on a Train" and "Vertigo" are among my favorites.

"Casablanca", Ingrid Bergman is ethereal, and Peter Lorre is delightfully creepy, as usual.

"Hugo" is not a oldie, but it's based around a classic silent movie. A wonderful film, I've watched it several times. See if you can spot the Johnny Depp cameo! Sasha Baron Cohen as the train station policeman is beyond words. LOVE IT!

Don't forget musicals:

Les Miserables
OKLAHOMA!
Singing in the Rain
Carousel
The Sound of Music
Cats

If you really want to cry your eyes out, watch "Rent". The song "Empty chairs and empty tables" nearly killed me. Crying (warning: Gay themed show, if that bothers you.)
