What do you think is the most important thing for a young family to consider when purchasing a home in a new community? Nice kids on the block? Distance from shul? Kitchen? Backyard? Local school? size? room for growth?

All of the above,
But good neighbors IMO is #1
Your kids need friends that will be a positive influence on them
Also, good school in the area

Good normal neighbors is my #1 priority.
Everyone Has things that are important for their family, some need a big yard while some need a big kitchen.... but neighbors can really make it or break it.

But neighbors can move in or move away.

I don't think there's a One Thing that's important.

My neighbor bought a condo. Was very picky with her fellow condo buyers. Finally she settled on something. She knew 5 out of the 6 ppl. Last minute one of the buyers decided not to move and is renting it out. They live right above her and are hell of neighbors. Dirty, noisy, u name it. So go figure!

Changeable by you:
Size and layout of home (subject to setbacks, local zoning, and $$$$$)
Condition of home
Landscaping

(Mostly) Beyond Your Control:
Location
Neighbors
Schools (unless you start your own!)
Lot size
Distance to Shul

And something in Between:

Neighborhood demographics, which you influence by your choice. My own neighborhood is becoming younger and frummer. A few young families moving on to a block tends to have a ripple effect.

Assuming you will be able to deal with the changeable items by renovating or expanding in the future, I would suggest a young family first focus on neighborhood demographics and then the Beyond Your Control items. And if you are tied to a particular shul or school, distance from Shul or other Shul/school families nearby matters a lot.
