I really love Akiva but DH isn't crazy about it-so he suggested Yochanan instead (since it's also after a great rabbi rather than biblical). I like it as an alternative to the wildly popular Yonatan (we live in Israel)-but Yonatan has the cute nickname Yoni. Does Yochanan have a nickname? I've only met one and he uses his full name, but it's sooo long especially for a newborn...

I know one who is called Chanan.
The previous Stoliner rebbe was Yochanan and there are tons of Yochi's in Stolin.
I also know a Yoshiyahu called Yoshi, which is similar sounding.

I think of Yochi more as a girl's nickname for Yocheved.

I also live in Israel and Yochanan is a family name. I would use חנניה instead. To me it's more Israeli sounding.

I know someone who used Nani as a nickname for a different name, but it would totally work for Yochanan. I'm in America and would consider Johnny but don't think that works as well in Israel. I love the name, it's recognizable but unique enough to be cool.
