Fellow infp here.

So deep thinkers - share your deepest thoughts.

Meaning of life?

42?

Yup this was supposed to be a serious thread but I kinda wrecked it with the 42.

Guess I'll have to hang my head in shame, in much the same way as bricks don't.

Mesilas Yeshorim:
האדם לא נברא אלא להתענג על ה', וזה העולם הבא. והאמצעיים לזה הם המצות, ומקום עשיתם בעולם הזה.

Chabad:
נתאוה הקב״ה להיות לו דירה בתחתונים

Google is your friend. this thread doesn't seem conducive to serious talk.

Like I said, I wrecked it with the 42.

Or maybe not.

Perhaps joy, laughter, making others smile IS the meaning of life.

The mesilat yesharim quote speaks to me more than the Chabad quote.

Does that make me selfish"

Theyre in essence saying the same thing.

I was going to immediately react with 42 but thought I should open the thread first since I didn't want to be flippant in the face of someone's potential pain.
But to be serious I've heard:
- to become givers - to emulate Hashem who created this world to give
- to become people who in the next world will be able to come closer to Hashem through our actions in this world
- to grow. Life is struggle and we are supposed to grow from it.

Reb Avigdor Miller said;
האדם לא נברא
And man was not created because of anything else
אלא להתענג
Only to enjoy!!!

Have fun.

Hard for me to believe that is the ultimate goal. I am always up for a good party yet that is not where I find meaning.
If you are talking about being happy then I can hear the argument.

This is not an argument. Rav Miller said this. If it doesn't make sense to you, his works are available for anyone to read and learn. It does take effort to follow through.

The ultimate goal is to enjoy life AND thank Hashem for every moment of pleasure.
He said don't go around town saying Rabbi Miller said I should eat steak! But, if you do eat steak, enjoy every bite and thank Hashem for it.
You mustnt party all day, but if you do, enjoy the party and Thank Hashem. Mission accomplished.
For more of this in depth, see his books. I love the white hard cover published in 2012.

Too enjoy doesn't mean cheap fun. I take it to mean the feeling that comes from investment.
When I've put a lot of thought and effort into any type of project, I enjoy the outcome way more than if it was done for me. (Much less so if I really disliked the process.)

that's not what it means. It's a quote taken out of context.

Read my full quote above. To enjoy Hashem! in olam habah. that's why a person was created. How do we get that? Through doing mitzvos and ma'asim tovim in olam hazeh.

Read Rabi Noach's book on five levels of pleasure. Creating something, what you call investment, is the fourth level of pleasure. The fifth and ultimate is connecting to Hashem.

Being happy is not the final purpose of our creation although only through simcha can one achieve his purpose.
