following...

But for us, sometimes we have a family project to stock the freezer with kugels. When we don't have those, though, we have quinoa or rice with our chulent... with salad.

Rice, because it's gluten free. It also works well my meatballs, roasts with sauce, etc, and us beyonh easy to make.

ETA just saw lunch, so no sauce. I still serve the rice. Challah does play a bigger role for us dueing the day with dips and liver, plus the chulent has barley.

We don't usually need more than challah but when making a bigger meal usually something that's good at room temp/cold like
Sesame noodles
Potato salad
Rice salad

We've made this "cheat" recipe a few times. The rice is spiced by the box packet.

We have been very into some fun grains... besides being tasty they also are healthier than just white rice or a potato dish. These have lots of protein and fiber so I don't feel bad when my kids eat tons of it and not the chicken...

Quinoa (regular and red)
Farro (After you cook it, serve with finely diced shallots and tomato)
Freekeh- not so easy to find but totally worth it! I just follow the recipe on the back of the bag (Bob's Red Mill brand) for the pilaf.

I like the Farro idea with shallots. Thanks

I put this in a previous thread.

cook rice (or other grain for variety, e.g. couscous, millet, quinoa, etc).
fry loads and loads of onions until well done (but not black) with salt, pepper and spices (e.g. cinnamon/turmeric/cumin/corinander/paprika/cardamom). mix it all together, done! you can serve this hot or cold

Quinoa (also have a few diff recipes I go through)
