I'm losing weight and keeping to 1,500 calories a day. I don't include fresh fruits and veggies, so it's probably a few hundred more than that.

How many calories should I budget for Erev Tisha bav? I don't want to break my diet and overeat, but I want to have energy for the fast.

Does eating more the day before a fast truly help the day of the fast?

I find that eating as normally as possible before and after the fast is actually the best.

Eat normally. I find that when I over eat before a fast I get hungry sooner and I'm in the bathroom more often. When I eat my usual amount then I'm OK.
But do drink lots and lots throughout the day. Maybe get a cup of water with a straw and keep refilling.

Unless you're living in the Southern Hemisphere -- and even then -- the most important thing is to enter the fast well hydrated.
