On Facebook there is a 500 comment thread going about peoples parenting failures. I commented that it is not wise to admit some of this stuff to a group of 21,000 strangers on the chance that one of them feels it necessary to report you to social services. A lot of people seemed to think that there was nothing wrong with letting small kids play while you go back to sleep.
My question is this: If you are a social worker or other mandated reporter would you consider this neglect and feel that you need to call social services or would you say no big deal. I am starting to question my sanity and would love a reality check.

Depends on the ages and setup of the home. Also depends how lightly you sleep.

Omg.
Sounds torturous to me.
If something ever happens to one of these people then the social services will have lots of evidence.
Please don't make that mistake!

I wouldn't report for that. And I'm a pediatric hospital social worker. unless it was an unwitnessed fall off a bed (infant) resulting in skull fracture, I wouldn't report (meaning, if a kid was jumping on couch and broke elbow while parent was asleep in the next room) I'd educate.

Nope. Doesn't sound reportable to me. I'm a mandated reporter.

So the kids have access to the parents?
Are the parents deep sleepers?
Is the child a normally relaxed child or does it have ADHD SN etc?
Every detail makes a difference.

AFAIK you are only a mandated reporter if you have a professional relationship with them. Oh, and on a different note, I'm also pretty sure that HIPPA only applies to people that you have a professional relationship with as well.

I'm also a mandated reporter and have been told that I must have a relationship with the child in order to be required to report abuse.
