Would one be arrested for going in to a private property to take out a ball that rolled in by mistake, or one would just get a ticket?

Why are you saying that. The property owner called the cops on our guest.

How awful for your guest.

How did they enter the property?

It's a class b misdemeanor in New York. (Obviously I don't know where you are). Not fun to have to deal with.

Normally you walk up to the front door, knock, and ask for the ball back. If they give permission, they tell you to just grab it.

You don't wander into someone's yard without asking! It is private property. Do you want someone opening the front door and enter your living room because they left a phone there when they were visiting earlier? No! Knock first!
Maybe the neighbor is upset because people keep entering their private property. Perhaps ruining their garden or landscaping. Making them feel spied on and lose their privacy.

No kids, she is only 19. We had such a good time. We were joking around about going to jail for this. Until the cops drove away we didn't think this is seriously happening. I feel so guilty!

I don't live in your county - I don't know.

I do know that when you are arrested for criminal behavior you stand before a judge at some point where you get to plead your case if you choose to, and if convicted to receive a sentence/fine. However, the matter could be dropped.

They actually took her away in handcuffs in a police car for taking her own ball from the neighbors property? At 3 o'clock in the morning????

Are the neighbors Jewish?

Seriously you have to move house.
