Anyone know meaning/spelling/anything about this name? I just found out it's my great-great-great-grandmother's name - I previously didn't know anything about my family beyond my great-great-grandfather, so I'm intrigued. As far as I can tell, she was born in the 1860s in Russia.

Reminds me of the Vilna Gaon. Was your great-great-great-grandmother from there? (Vilna/Velna?)

As far as I know she was from Russia.
I suppose it could be an English/secular name and it's actually Vichna or something - her son was Max/Moshe so even though they were frum they didn't mind English names. But I looked up Velna, not that I trust online baby name sites, and it is apparently Latvian for "female devil" so I was hoping there was some other meaning!

rofl These sites are unreliable....
I'm thinking.
Surname. Something like Welniasz
Location. Vilna.
Or a name like Velya, Felya...

Is it possible the name was "Velma?"
