As many as 11 million eggs sold in Israeli supermarkets around the country may be infected with a dangerous strain of salmonella, the Health Ministry warned Tuesday morning.

According to the ministry, routine checks of eggs from the ‘Yesh Meof’ brand revealed the presence of a particularly dangerous enteritidis strain of the salmonella bacteria.

Following the discovery, Health Ministry officials conducted tests on coops chicken coops used by suppliers of Yesh Meof eggs, and confirmed the presence of salmonella enteritidis bacteria at one site.

The Health Ministry has warned consumers not to purchase eggs of the Yesh Meof brand that have a “sell by” date prior to October 20th. The ministry has also advised any consumers who have already purchased such eggs to immediately dispose of them.

According to a report in The Marker citing government officials, as many as 11 million eggs could be affected by the recall.

Distribution of the infected eggs has been halted, but ministry officials say many of the eggs have already reached supermarket shelves.

Consumption of the contaminated eggs can cause diarrhea and fever, with small children, the elderly, and people suffering from weakened immune systems most susceptible to the bacteria, which in some instances can cause internal bleeding and require hospitalization.

How do I know if my eggs are that company? Mine did not have a paper on them.

Help. I've been feeling weak and feverish since yesterday and had stomach pains in the night as well. Could it be from that?

Don't eat them. I would take them back to the store.

Did you eat anything with eggs yesterday that could have been undercooked?
Did you handle eggs?

Lots of people sell from their homes. What are those?

I have 15 eggs from that brand in my fridge.
Would a store really take them back?
Is there a start date for when this became a problem? I bought the eggs a couple weeks ago.
And is it still a problem if I thoroughly cook them?

I threw mine out. Had two left. Not to take a chance. One of My kids started with fever diarrhea and terrible stomach pain and I'm not sure if this caused it!

I'll throw them out, then. Do I have to wash out my fridge? Is anyone offering refunds?

The instructions that we got were not to cook them or use them in any way.
Apparently this is a more virulent strain of salmonella than usually found in eggs and they don't want people to take any chances.
I would wipe down whatever surfaces the eggs had touched with soap and water.
I don't know about refunds. They're saying that 11 million eggs might be affected by this!

I don't know, but every now and then you read in the news that the police and the Ministry of Agriculture have apprehended huge consignments of eggs from the Palestinian Authority as they were being smuggled into Israel. They are also usually stored and transported in inappropriate conditions and are sometimes contaminated with bacteria to begin with.
I would not buy unmarked eggs from a private person selling from their home.
