My daughters have a new obsession with non jewish music, they also claim that some music is more "appropriate" than other music. One of their "favorite!!!" singers is lana delray or something like that...can anyone tell me how appropriate her music actually is?

Of course some music is more appropriate than other music.

- Mozart is more appropriate than Nicki Minaj
- Simon & Garfunkel are more appropriate than Eminem
- Adele is more appropriate than N.W.A.

You can google her name and the word "lyrics" to get an idea of how appropriate her music is.

I was curious about what kind of music she sang so I googled her songs and one song's lyrics.

Im going to say that her songs are probably extremely not appropriate for teenagers to listen to.

No no no, Lana del Rey has the "tragic boozy love, broken yet glamorous, I like bad boys who are older than me" thing going on. It's very emotional and dreamy and poetic (I can see why teenagers might relate), but absolutely NOT good morals for a frum teenage girl to marinate her brain in

The ones that play on the radio are probably at least somewhat censored (in terms of cuss-words, if not content), but her albums are NOT safe

Some non Jewish songs are very inspirational & more appropriate than some Jewish songs...
You need to censor what they're listening to. Some singers are a no no while some are ok.

I'm not sure what you meant by tragic and all that? Is it about drugs and sx...or is it about suicide?

Did you read the song lyrics like we asked you to?
I think her entire persona is very tragic-yet-romantic. It's like she puts a beautiful Instagram filter over a life of drugs and unhealthy relationships. She may not be happy, but WOW if her lipstick isn't devastatingly red! Are you really living if your relationships aren't tempestuous, reckless and self-destructive?!

Quote:
I f***ed my way up to the top,
This is my show.
I f***ed my way up to the top,
Go, baby, go.

Go, go, go, go, go,
This is my show.
Go, go, go, go, go,
This is my show.

I'm a dragon, you're a wh*re,
Don't even know what you're good for.
Mimickin' me's a f***in' bore
To me, but babe.

Lyrics don't explicitly say "I plan to kill myself and this is how", but the music video depicts both the singer and her lover committing suicide by jumping off tall places.
Quote:

I'm feelin' electric tonight
Cruising down the coast goin' 'bout 99
Got my bad baby by my heavenly side
I know if I go, I'll die happy tonight

Oh, my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above are sizzling like a snare
Honey, I'm on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothing scares me anymore

(1, 2, 3, 4)

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That, baby, you're the best

I got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Domestic Abuse/Violence
Quote:
He used to call me DN
That stood for deadly nightshade
Cause I was filled with poison
But blessed with beauty and rage
Jim told me that
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
Jim brought me back
Reminded me of when we were kids

With his ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
Ultraviolence
I can hear sirens, sirens
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
I can hear violins, violins
Give me all of that ultraviolence

She's a mess. And I don't even understand all the lyrics. Also, Del Rey.
