Any tips to get 18 mo to hold my hand when we walk? He just wants to run his own way.

Stroller or "backpack"
My 18 month old couldn't be trusted to hold hands reliably

Harness/leash is a useful tool for certain kids. Sometimes they need or prefer to have both hands free for balance. Be sure to get one that straps around the chest (not a wrist) and has sturdy Velcro that closes in the back. I still insist on hand-holding to cross the street, to keep the child close and not in the habit of running into the street.

Get a harness. It's not comfortable for a kid to have their arm raised for a long time, and it gives them more freedom while keeping them safe. Some of the harnesses are very cute- like a monkey backpack with a long tail you can hold. When I was a kid they looked like real leashes and when my mom put me in one I used to pretend to be a puppy.

I was anti leash. Then 2 kids ran from my mom in Disney, and 1 kid ran from me at the racecourse. Yeah. Bad looks are much less worse.

I kept my kid in a stroller until she could hold my hand reliably.
