My 9 year old son has a diagnosis of ASD. He is doing very well academically (mainstream) and has made a lot of progress socially. My main concern is his aggressive behavior towards our other kids. Its come to a point where it is unbearable for me and his siblings. We've seen a psychiatrist specializing in children with ASD and he did not recommend medication for the time being. He said it is a behavioral issue and should first be dealt with behaviorally. Since we've seen the psychiatrist (4 months ago) we've done ABA therapy. At first things got better then it stopped being effective. I'm at my wits end. I'm wondering if I should go back to the psychiatrist for meds or look into different type of therapies.

I have a son of a similar age who does well academically and socially and was suffering from that same issue - he would lose his temper and lash out, sometimes physically. He is on meds and I have seen a lot of improvement. It seems the meds make it easier for him to slow down and think before reacting. I discussed strategies of how to deal with unpleasant situations with him both before and after the meds, but the meds make it easier for him to actually implement them.

If you're finding that ABA is not being effective anymore, perhaps try looking into Floortime. https://www.stanleygreenspan.c.....rents
It can be extremely helpful for children with ASD.
