My son just started reading and loves it. Nothing scary though. He’s very literal, and a worrier

So nice that your son reads and loves it! Truly a bracha
It would really depend on his reading level. I've had first graders who stick to "green eggs and ham" and those who started harry potter.
I have't read all of the them...but we have one "Henry and Mudge" book that my kids love.
Your local library should have some good suggestions as well.

The piggy and elephant books by mo willems. They are so funny, not so many words, and the kids want to read them.
