I heard that Tofutti might have a kashrus problem. Something to do with not kashering at 212?

Has anyone heard about anything? Can find any info online and I so desperately want their vanilla ice cream with my apple crisp tonight!!

If you hold by the C.H. Rabbonim and the OK Labs, they have deemed such problemataic. Again.

re: www.kof-k.org

"There are no alerts".

They supervise Tofutti and there are no alerts at the moment on that website. Sheesh- I just stocked up last night.

dh said there's no point in contacting the chof-k 'cuz they'll obviously deny it.

Thanks choco, although you've really disappointed me!!

If you assume that kof-K would *obviously* deny that there's any problem, even if they are aware of one, then you're assuming that its not a reliable hecksher, and shouldn't be using any product that they supervise. Any basis for that?

They don't see it as a problem and the products remain kosher and parve.

Dh just informed me that not kashering at 212 is a Lubavitch chumra.
Sorry.

That would explain why he said not to bother calling them. As choco said, they don't see it as a kashrus problem.

Choco, is this a recent thing, or has it always been this way?

Over the years, there has always been an issue with SOMEONE not kashering at 212.

tofutti is pareve. as far as I know, kashering at 212 has to do only with milchig. so im not sure what your asking?

Hi PinkTichel and everyone,

I heard from a reliable source that the problem is only with the cream cheese line which is at a specific plant where they make milchik regular cream cheese. The kashering there is not up to 212 standards.

The issue DOES NOT affect their other products.

Obviously check with your own local Orthodox Rabbi (or call the OK for clarification), but this is what someone told me.

I'm with you PinkTichel on the disappointment factor, as I only heard about this after making pareve cheese cake.

I spoke to the kof k about this a year ago. They share machinery with dairy products that are cholov stam and then before running their tofutti products they are only able to kasher at 198 b/c the equiptment doesn't heat up as high as 212. if you hold by 212 this would pose a problem.

It is only the better than cream cheese and the better than sour cream line. The ice cream is FINE.

kind of sad because why would anyone think to ask this question for a pareve product?

Because it's not a Problem. It's a Hiddur. It's pareve. They kasher.

It's just not "our" standards.
