This article lists about 1000 store closings for 2018. Lots of lost jobs and boarded up retail space that turns old malls into ghost towns.

The dark side of online buying and a hardship not only for those who lose jobs but also for those who can’t or prefer not to shop online.

Twenty or thirty years ago small 'Mom and Pop' stores experienced their own apocalypse, thanks to their inability to compete with the cheap prices offered by major chain stores. Most large chain stores pay their employees a tad over minimum wage and provide little in the way of benefits. These stores obliterated the little guy, and now the internet is obliterating them. Every J.Crew or Target or whatever is virtually the same. Their employees making $9 or $10 an hour at a dead-end job with few benefits could care less about providing good service, for the most part. It's just not interesting to shop at these big name stores anymore (was it ever?).

I see a lot of people making their own Amazon, eBay, Ali Express, Shopify and other online businesses. Good for them! By providing a professional and equal-access platform, the internet is providing a way for 'the little guy' to make a comeback against big retailers.
