I was at the BP 49/13 branch of Santander, depositing a lot of cash, and a Santander teller probably made an honest mistake that could have costed me over a 1,000 had I not noticed it.

She handed me the slip and I saw the new balance was wrong because the deposit amount was wrong.

The slip said I deposited half of the amount I deposited.

Dont tellers double check, before they hand you the slip?

She said it happened because she pushed the "1" on her computer, instead of the "2", making my deposit amount 1,000 less.

Do you think it was it an honest mistake?

If Id have come back later to say she keyed in the wrong amount, what would have happened?

Santander in Midwood uses an automated bill counter for cash bills, so it's pretty accurate. I'm surprised other branches don't have it.

Of course you should double check when depositing or withdrawing money.

However, in general, what would occur if you reported this kind of discrepancy after you left is that they would count the money and there would theoretically be $1000 more in the till.

If the teller was dishonest and had pocketed the money, it might be a problem. I am completely unfamiliar with bank security but I would be shocked if there weren't cameras taping every second in the bank and so it would be difficult for a teller to pocket money surreptitiously without it showing up on tape. Not impossible but difficult. The Las Vegas casinos have similar very sophisticated surveillance on the dealers to prevent theft.

She used the "counter" I heard the bills shuffling. She asked me how much cash Im depositing and I told her. She keyed in the wrong number though.

In a bank? If I would have all of the experiences that you posted, I would have closed my account and left a while ago.

I once made a deposit in a bank (not the one in question) and their machines were down so they signed it manually. I came back the next day and saw they were off by $50. They refused to correct it and put in my account the additional $50. I went to the manager who tried to "show me" that they added it in after. I stopped banking at that bank and opened an account with another bank. If they can get away with stealing $50 then they'll find a way to steal larger amounts too.

I agree with this. Your bank should be one of your most trusted institutions.

I dont always do what DH says, but he says I have nothing to gain by reporting this. Ill only be uncomfortable when I walk into the bank. I have a reason I cant change banks. This experience teaches us how careful you have to be when you deposit cash, especially banks that no,longer use deposit slips. Had I written a deposit slip with the amount of cash deposited, Id have a leg to stand on if I came back to the bank, after realizing it at home. Santander doesnt use deposit slips any more. You tell them or write the amount youre depositing and the account number. Now I see that the new system can cause problems.

what to report? the teller made a mistake - you caught it - you told her - she corrected it.

I hope that it was a honest mistake, but if I were a bank exec Id like to know if any teller repeatedly makes honest mistakes to the tune of $1,000.00. If I dont report, bank admin will never know it happened.

If its only one person reporting it means nothing. If multiple people report, it means a lot.

there are most likely cameras, and there are reconciliations done daily to account for the cash on hand. If there was an extra $1000 unaccounted for - the bank exec would find out.

If its not an honest mistake, basically you are saying that the bank teller was going to steal $1,000 from you. So you aren't reporting a mistake - you are reporting what you think is an attempted bank robbery.

Its your money. Check the receipt as a general habit. There is a reason you are given one.

If this is your only option for banking - tattling on the tellers isn't a great idea. Just keep an eye on their work.
