Just curious.

This year the PTA is asking for $40 per child (girls elementary school). They did not state a family maximum though I'm sure they'd accept one, except my family is not large (two children in the school) so I wouldn't reach the maximum anyway. I can't remember what it was last year but I don't recall writing an $80 check...

I always make it a point of prioritizing school-related expenses and contributing whenever asked. I know I treat myself to things now and then and if I'd hold back on those then that money would be freed up, so I'm too honest to ask for a discount from PTA or school instead of cutting my own corners. But it feels like a lot.

This is girls' school, so no higher rebbi expectations, fwiw.

Anyway I didn't want to turn this into another venting post, I'm just curious what the actual numbers are of what you're asked to contribute.

DD's school collects $30 per child. That seems much more reasonable than my son in preschool where I'm being asked to send in $25 per teacher (x3).

My girl's elementary school asks for $25 for 1 child, $20 per child if you have 2 or more children in the school, and a family maximum of $60. Money goes to teachers, assistants, office/support staff, etc. I like this way vs. tipping teachers directly. Otherwise the teachers who teach gym, computers, music, etc. end up getting nothing.

That sounds more like what I think it was previous years. I couldn't remember but it did seem like 40 was a big jump.

My daughters school asks for $10/teacher, $7/ assistant + $15/family. The $15 per family the pta divides among secretaries and gym music etc. Tutors, title I and support staff parents give separately. I liked this system until my daughter hit upper elementary with 4-6 teachers and the cost rose. Im not complaining cuz I could choose to opt out.

For the secular studies teacher and her assistant we are asked for a minimum of $6 each.

For the rebbeim the hanhala got rid of the group gift. They want everyone to write notes of hakaras hatov and kind of skirted around the money topic when I asked about it. Our class got together to do a group gift anyway. Anyone could quickpay the class mother with an amount they can afford.

Bh I can afford it and I don’t have a large family but whenever I do get a requests for money for tips or whatever I always think about those who can’t and really feel for them.

I live in Baltimore. In my sons school we are asked if we would like to join the class gift. It is voluntary, so no pressure. If you do want to join, they ask for $10 for the general studies teacher, plus ifyou are in 1st grade and there is an assistant they ask for an extra $5. They also offer an optional contribution for office staff, support staff etc. They ask you to please give the rebbi a gift yourself, they are not organizing it for rebbeim, only general studies and administration staff.

When I read all the above amounts requested, I feel so good that I live in Baltimore! Anyone who is comfortable here and would like to give a bigger gift to the teacher can do it on their own. Wondering where are the previous responders who were asked for more money than me ,live...
so grateful for this mostly down to earth, not too materialistic community. BH.
