once we're correcting op, "over the top" is not used correctly.
I'd write ...who went above and beyond the call of duty

My husband is a dr. He really cherishes the handwritten cards from his patients. You'd be surprised how few people do that these days. Or maybe not surprised in this era of texting.
Forget the gift, really. Just a heartfelt card is all you need.
