Do these locations have orthodox Jewish communities, and how many orthodox families in each, what is the community like?

Winston-Salem NC, Durham NC, Chapel Hill NC
San Antonio TX, Galveston TX,
Birmingham AL,
Sacramento CA,
Jacksonville FL, Tampa FL,
Iowa City,
Kansas City,
Lexington KY,
Royal Oak MI,
Columbia MO,
Columbus OH,
Hershey PA
Richmond, VA, Norfolk, VA
Albuquerque NM

Or are any of these places within half hour drive from an orthodox community.
ETA looking for a place that has an orthodox day school and more than just a chabad shul. Otherwise it is probably too small

Iowa City has one Chabad family. Maybe a few other families or individuals who are on some spectrum of observance. I wouldn't say it has an Orthodox community at all.

Lexington Ky has a Chabad shaliach but no Orthodox community. Louisville, about an hour away, has a small Orthodox community.

Colombus Ohio yes, but very small.
Hershey PA is right near Harrisburg PA I believe, and I think they have a decent sized community.
Why don’t you tell us more specifically what your looking for ?

If you are interested in Northern California in general, and not specifically tied to Sacramento, you should also look into Berkeley, Oakland, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and San Jose.

I live within the Detroit Jewish community. Royal Oak is roughly 5-10 minutes from my house. The Hospital most of us use for services is in Royal Oak.

Maybe go to the National Council of Young Israel website or OU website to see if there are any shuls listed in those areas as well as elementary schools and High schools. if they have a high school, its pretty certain its not too small.

The following should have more than just 1 Chabad shul, and most have some sort of Jewish day school as well. Some of the ones you mentioned have a Hillel house at the local university, but not a community with established families. A few of them have no Orthodox presence whatsoever. A good resource to quickly check out shul options in a city is godaven.com. You can also check out the OU small community fair to see who participates and what Jewish amenities they offer.

Durham NC
San Antonio TX
Jacksonville FL
Tampa FL
Kansas City (actually Overland Park, KS)
Columbus OH

Madison, WI, has two Chabads—one that's for the community and one that's for the university—but that's it.

A number of observant folks who are associated with the university in Davis (near Sacramento) live in Berkeley and commute to the Sacramento area as the community in Berkeley is much larger and it’s a pretty easy ride on the train.

Jacksonville FL has an Orthodox shul with 80 families and growing, a day school, a fleishig restaurant and now a girls high school too. Also a separate Sephardic minyan. Warm weather, big affordable homes. Feel free to PM me for details.

Columbia MO is a college town. There's a Hillel House on campus, but nothing else religious.

Know personally of Columbus OH (tuition vouchers!) and Norfolk VA, a nice community!
You might also consider Malden, MA or Sharon, MA which are close to Boston.

Is this a med school or residency related list?

Anyway, yes, Hershey is just outside Harrisburg, which has a community. Not huge, but there is a school up to 8th grade, a JCC, a mikvah, a shul. Shopping isn't great, but it's just over an hour from Baltimore.
