I totally get you. Healthcare costs these days are really out of control. Though I do agree with other posters that $1200 for a family plan is not that high. Here’s what I pay:

Me-I need a good insurance because I have health problems, so I get it through my employer. I pay $700 monthly premium + $64 union dues, and I have a $3000 deductible.
DH- has catastrophic insurance through the marketplace. I think it’s $180 per month, with a $7000 deductible.
DS-child health plus, $15 monthly premium, no other out of pocket costs.

A few things to consider:

Can your children get Child Health Plus, and then you and DH can get a couple plan (Instead of a family plan) which should have a lower premium?

If you are still eligible for Medicaid, they have a relatively unknown program called Premium Assistance Program, where they contribute to the costs of your premium through your employer, instead of paying for a Medicaid HMO.

If you are not eligible for Medicaid, then look into the essential plan, or an Obamacare plan with a subsidy. You have to crunch the numbers and compare how much an Obamacare plan vs. employer plan will cost, when taking all copays, deductibles, coinsurance into account.

Is your husband’s employer contributing to the premium? If he is not, and you are paying the full premium, then it is probably not considered an “affordable” plan under the ACA, and so you would still be eligible for a subsidy for a marketplace plan.

In Brooklyn, Nachas Health and Yeled V’Yalda can help you figure out obamacare.

Also what's coinsurance?
And what's a marketplace plan?

Proper and adequate health care is for the well-to-do. Your question ''How do people afford health insurance'' is rhetorical. The wealthy afford it, the others don't.

A deductible means that you pay the cost of medical care until you meet the deductible. For example, if you have a $3,000 deductible and you need a sick visit and throat culture, you will have to pay the cost of the visit and culture and it will count towards the deductible. Once you have paid $3,000 in costs for the year, the insurance will cover any further costs. Usually preventative care like an annual visit is covered in full even before you meet the deductible.

Does your husband's employer have an HR person or an insurance broker they work with who can explain some of the details to you?

Definitely put your kids on CHP. No copays or deductibles. I am a single mother. My kids are on CHP. I pay over $500 for insurance for myself with something like a $6,000 deductible. It is through my employer and pre-tax, but I pay the whole premium.

Thanks for the clear breakdown. I spoke to nachas they don't do Obamacare. I'm lost and don't know whom I can talk to to explain me all options.
Also, what's a deductible? Can u give me an example?
My kids are eligible for child health plus for $45 per child per month.

I dealt with someone in the past who was very helpful with Obamacare.

We lie about our income to get Medicaid.
Gotta do what you gotta do. Most people I know do that besides the wealthy. I’m not stealing so I can buy designer clothes. Just looking out for my family. The system is broken. Why do people who pay a ton in insurance still have to pay copays as well, while under Medicaid everything is covered?

Also, I suggest you remove this post. You're admitting to a crime. If you are arrested for fraud (not as far fetched as it sounds) and your computer is searched here is your confession.

Wow ! Thanks for the clear explanation. Just wondering why would you take a plan with such a high deductible?

Agreed! What a crazy and sad thing to so glibly admit to a crime and fraud - frightening.

I think that if employer offers coverage for the children then they can't get child health plus as far as I understand.

Every child is eligible for child health plus. It's just a matter of how much it costs per child as it's income dependant. It can cost nothing, $15 a month per child, or $254 a month per child (where you pay the whole premium and CHP pays nothing).

I have had Obamacare in the past. I would not say that it “sucks.” Depending on your income level, you can get a substantial subsidy to defray the cost of the premium.

The problem with Obamacare is that the provider networks are smaller, so you won’t have a huge selection of doctors/hospitals. This was an issue for me, because I have several health conditions that are managed by top specialists in Manhattan who do not accept Obamacare plans. Also, I may need to go out of state for medical care, and obamacare only works in your state. So I had no choice but to switch to my employer’s plan.

But, if you and your family members are healthy, and you are flexible about which doctors you go to, then it should be fine. Also, there are differnt health insurance plans that you can buy through the marketplace, and some have better networks than others. For example, United Healthcare Compass and Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield have pretty large networks and many Manhattan doctors take them. Oscar and Fidleis have much smaller networks, but they are cheaper than UHC or BCBS.

“Obamacare” and “marketplace” are referring to the same thing. It means buying government subsidized health insurance through the NYS Health Exchange.

IIRC, there was a person at Nachas named Mr. Soloff who dealt with Obamacare and non-Medicaid plans. Call them and ask for his number. Or call Yeled V’Yalda Facilitated Enrollment-718-686-2188 (I think that’s the number but I could be wrong).

My advice is to speak with them and get actual numbers about how much an Obamacare plan will cost you. Then compare with the employer plan.

Middle class America is being priced out. I didn’t create the insane cost of living in this country.

the big problem is that health insurance has become for the wealthy AND the poor. It's inaccurate to say it's just for the wealthy, medicaid is pretty sweet- I'm currently on it for the first time in my life.

It 's the middle folks that have the issue. We've tried buying through the market place and we couldn't get care. So since we qualified we went on medicaid. The system is broken.

Yeah my pay check is slashed about $1300/month for family of 6 for health insurance. It’s not considered expensive although it is very expensive for me. My dad thought me right, never cheat or lie Hashem knows how much to give us.

To the mother who openly admit to cheating the system. I’m sorry but I have to vent. System is corrupt because of people like you it’s such hillul Hashem to lie and steal. How do you pray afterwards knowing you cheat and lie. I just don’t get these people. Do you think it’s not hard for us??? I don’t buy anything design bags, shoes etc.... but I don’t cheat and lie.
I rather live poor and honestly.

If you get caught, you'll end up needing to pay the entire cost of what Medicaid paid on your behalf, well more than any insurance premiums would have cost. Not to mention a fine and possible jail time.
