if u have any words ur not sure how to pronounce, but obviously embarrassed to ask someone, here's the place. everyone post your word/words, and then others can spell it out phonetically.

I have one. the word 'corp' as in ambulance corp. Is the 'p' silent? cuz I hear so many people pronounce it 'cor'. anyone know?

I used to pronounce Seoul, South Korea "see-ool" instead of "sole." When the Olympics were there, my husband kept saying, "Look, they're in see-ool" to torture me.

This is a clever (and potentially funny!) thread!

My daughter pronounces "Sleuth" from her Nancy Drew books as "sleth".

(correct pronounciation: "slooth")

Here's my question:

The name Otis.

Is it OH-tis or AH-tis?
embarrassed I know, it sounds so dumb...

I was reading "Otis Spofford" by Beverly Cleary to my kids and I was wondering about that.

When I was younger, I used to read misled as my-zld, although I never used that pronunciation in speech. It never occurred to me that miss-led and myzld were the same word until somebody was reading out loud in an English class. Luckily I managed to stop myself "correcting" them!

corp is pronounced "cor"
Otis...well, we always pronounced it "Oh-tis" never heard it the other way Smile

in high school, my friend's little sister had no idea what a chest of drawers was...she always pronounced it chester drawers. and determined, she always said "dee-ter-mined" instead of "dih-ter-mined"

I remember being completely stumped by the word spigot which I pronounced spicket. embarrassed

When I was younger there was this book I loved to read that always had the word "chaos" in it. I wondered what chay-os was and it wasn't until I was in college that I realized the correct way to pronounce it

If anyone is interested, there is a fabulous old book called There's No Zoo In Zoology which guides the reader through the most commonly mispronounced English words. It's a great read.

in public I will never say the last name 'Pinnis' for fear of accidentally mispronouncing it. freudian slip, ya know? I feel so bad for people with that last name. dh and I were talking about it- we'd probably change our name!! jk

I never knew how to pronounce "lingerie" - I thought it was lin-ger-y.

It took a long time before I figured out that lingerie and "laun-ger-ay" were the same word...

voila = vwala

sean = shawn

some words are pronounced differently depending on where you come from

herbal, some pronounce with the 'h' some without

nougat, I've heard being pronounced nugget but that just seems so wrong. a nugget is a piece of chicken or gold whereas nougat (noo gaa) is a sweet.
