It's interesting to me how many non-chasidim don't know that the Vilna Gaon was a great kabbalist and that he said that a rabbi cannot properly decide a law in the Torah without thorough knowledge of Kabbalah.

I think there were many events in Jewish History during that time period that precipitated his rise. You have to look at the state of the Jewish people during that era.

That's weird, because a family member knew "Avner Gold"'s daughter, who told her that this is not her father's name.
