It's "static"y, so I wet it (even slightly) and ruin the style. What can I do to rid the static?

how about some hair gel in a spray version ... garnier fructose makes one ... that's what I use on my hair

get a spray conditioner. the hair needs moisture. water will dry out the hair, making it worse.
