If both would be pronouced with the Israel accent May-'eer or Ya-'eer, which would you like more?

With an Israeli accent it's Meh-EAR as opposed to May-EAR.
Yah-EAR is more modern, I don't know any young Meirs here.

I like Meyer (yiddish), but not Meir pronounced may-ear.
Yair is Biblical but still sounds much more modern.
I like both.

My 7 year old is named Meir, after his paternal grandfather.

He really does light up a room with his smile.

That being said, I like Yair too. It's more modern though, if that's what you're looking for.

Do people really choose their baby's names based on what a bunch of anonymous women think?

My bechor (firstborn son) is Meir and I was working for a secular company when he was born. When I told them I named my son Meir, they all responded "as in, Mayor of the city?" I didn't realize how it sounded - so they used to ask "how's Koch doing?" since Koch was the mayor of NYC at the time.

That's actually funny.

My husband's name is Elazar and he is known as Luzer.
All the secular people have a problem with that because they don't think he should be called "Loser". LOL

My Yair is named after a Meir but didn't want the "mayor" prob. Already had that with another name, another child. He still gets called "YA-ear" instead of "ya-EAR".

My Yair also ALWAYS gets the YA-ear. Even from his own grandparents who I have repeatedly asked to do otherwise. I always laugh when ppl ask me his name and I say Ya-EAR. "Oh. hi "YA-ear." Like, and is your name "Ju-DEE?"

I am in Israel. Think again. Although most of the mispronunciations are from Americans.
